1- What are the disadvantages of CNC milling?
High-precision CNC milling machines require significant initial capital investment and high ongoing operating costs.
Workers must be proficient in CAD/CAM software and proficient in G-code programming and path optimisation. Each time a program, fixture, or tool is changed, the machine must be re-set up, increasing startup time and debugging complexity.
Tool vibration during cutting can affect surface quality; mechanical backlash can also cause positioning errors. The machine table’s limited reach makes it difficult or impossible to complete large workpieces in a single pass.
Conventional milling is limited to deep holes, internal cavities, sharp angles, or complex grid structures, requiring additional auxiliary processes (such as wire EDM, EDM, and spark erosion). Once a path or fixture is determined, design changes may require reprogramming and adjustments, limiting production flexibility.
While CNC milling has many disadvantages, most can be prevented through routine inspections and prior knowledge. Overall, milling remains a popular machining method.
2- What’s the difference between CNC drilling and milling compared to standalone CNC milling?
In addition to milling capabilities, CNC drilling and milling also integrates drilling, tapping, and reaming functions. This eliminates the need for separate machine or fixture replacement.
Drilling and milling machines can perform a drilling-then-milling process within the same fixture setup, effectively reducing setup and alignment time. They are particularly efficient for high-volume, multi-hole machining.
Their programming combines milling and drilling processes, with dedicated drilling cycles and tapping functions. This provides high processing efficiency (fewer tool changes/setups, completing drilling and milling tasks in one go). High drilling accuracy is achieved, and a dedicated drilling mechanism supports deep and locating holes. In terms of flexibility and versatility, through-hole and contour processing can be performed simultaneously. However, the initial hardware cost is higher (integrated drilling mechanism and drill/tool changing system).
In general, if your workpiece or part batch frequently includes multiple locating holes, threaded holes, and assembly holes, and you want to save on fixture switching and tool changes, a CNC drilling and milling machine is a very cost-effective option.
3- How do you transport CNC milling machines?
Pre-Transport Preparation and Equipment Disassembly
Remove accessories and thoroughly clean the interior of the machine. Drain fluids to prevent leaks and corrosion. Remove removable components and pack them separately. If the machine is marked with shipping fixtures, ensure they are properly installed.
Packaging and Securing Methods
Use a pallet or wooden crate. Secure the machine base to the pallet floor with straps and tensioning tape. Fill the gap between the machine and the pallet with shock-absorbing pads, foam, or other materials, prioritizing the protection of the axes, spindle, and delicate components. Seal the entire pallet with stretch film or plastic wrap. For large machines, use custom fumigated wooden crates.
Transportation Options
For land transportation, use a dedicated flatbed, step-deck, or low-bed trailer to accommodate extra-wide or extra-high equipment. Some equipment may require lifting.
Destination Installation and Verification
Inspect the equipment’s appearance and packaging to ensure there are no visible signs of damage or loose packaging. Professional technicians will reconnect the power, air, and cooling systems, install accessories and fixtures, and calibrate the zero point.
