There are also different types of 5-axis CNC machines according to the form of rotary axis distribution, and the following are the five most common types:
Double Swivel Head Form
This form is the spindle rotated around the A-axis and the C-axis (the most common), i.e., double swivel. They offer high stability and flexibility, and are particularly suitable for large parts and complex curved surfaces.
Droop Swivel Head Form
This usually means that the spindle can be drooped, usually with only one axis of rotation. This form has a simple spindle travel structure and a large machining range for large or sloping surfaces, but it is not as flexible as the Double Rotary Head form.
Double Swivel Table Form
This form usually has two swivel axes, B-axis and C-axis, but the spindle is non-rotating and fixed direction. Due to the fixed spindle, the structure is stable, strong, and supports fast cutting, but is not suitable for large-sized parts.
Droop Table Form
This form is similar to the Droop Swivel Head Form, but the spindle does not rotate and the swivel swings in a pendulous fashion. It is compact and has a small footprint, but the degree of freedom is limited for machining heavy workpieces.
One Swing, One Rotate Form
This is usually a form where one axis swings on a spindle or table and the other axis rotates. This form is flexible and stable, and is often used in composite 5-axis CNC centers.

Why do 5-axis CNC machines need cooling systems?
This is because 5-axis CNC machines operate at faster cutting and rotational speeds than 3-axis CNC machines, leading to tool wear and workpiece overheating. The cooling system directly impacts the machining quality and efficiency of 5-axis CNC machines. There are two common cooling systems for 5-axis CNC machines:
Internal cooling system:
Instead of simply spraying from outside, this design channels coolant directly to the cutting edge. However, for setups with specialized piping, it demands a higher coolant flow and pressure to perform effectively.
External cooling system:
This approach usually relies on mist cooling. It’s simple and easy to maintain, but in most cases, it’s less efficient than internal cooling. That said, it remains the most common choice for 5-axis CNC machines due to its lower cost and ease of installation.
Additionally, lubricants and dry cutting can provide some relief, but if a 5-axis CNC machine runs continuously without an effective cooling system, it can quickly lead to overheating and tool wear.
